RIP iPod, 2004-2007

Published by Carter at 12:15 pm under Technology, Personal

On Monday my iPod finally kicked the dirt. It was pretty sudden too; Sunday night I was listening to Death Cab for Cutie while cooking dinner, then Monday morning when I plugged it into my Mac there was an error message about a corrupted hard drive.

I spent most of my time at work researching how to fix my iPod that would do no more than show a sad iPod face and here are the top three suggestions fixing this problem:

  1. Shake the iPod violently, then try turning it on.
  2. Drop the iPod from 4-feet above a carpeted or tiled floor (not concrete), then try turning it on.
  3. Drop Kick the iPod across one’s office space, then try turning it on.

People had success with all these methods multiple times and since my iPod already seemed dead, I thought I would try the first the two. Shaking the iPod did nothing, but amazingly dropping the iPod onto the carpet actually brought up a menu screen! My music was gone, but I thought all I would need to do is connect my iPod to my Mac and re-sync the information.

I connected my iPod and watch as iTunes attempted to restore the data. No dice. The error message stated that the harddrive was either corrupted or damaged, again.

So I started to look into the cost to repair an out-of-warranty iPod and prices start at $250! That’s the price of a new one, so I’ll probably pick up a new iPod soon. I could try replacing the harddrive, but there are no guarantees that that would work either. So the present my wife gave me on our first wedding anniversary is gone…but not forgotten.

That’s very frustrating. The wife got me one for my birthday - I’m getting way too dependant on it. I don’t think I can deal with it only working for 3 years.

Remind me again why everyone worships Jobs?

    KOM-

I totally agree with you. I’ve been using my iPod almost as a listening device in car, when I walk the dogs, sometimes while shopping for groceries to help the time pass.

Maybe iPods are like Replicants from Blade Runner- they burn twice as bright as other Mp3 players but only half as long.

At least the marriage has outlasted the iPod! That’s more than many can say.

Jene! Too damn true. Gotta count your blessings!

Still, I may be cheap (I mean, I am dirt cheap), but $250-350 for something that’s going to die in a matter of years is crazy! That, and I constantly put songs/videos directly onto my ipod, because, God help me, it has more hard-disk storage than my computer. What the heck am I supposed to do when it dies? I won’t have a fraction of the info saved in I-tunes…
